Descubriendo Jumilla / Discovering Jumilla

Aunque no lo crean, al día siguiente de nuestro ladies night, nos paramos "temprano" para ir en una aventura que nos dejó a todos gratamente sorprendidos. Desde que nos avisó Glendibiris que vendría a visitarnos quedamos en que esta vez, en su segunda visita a Murcia,  iríamos a descubrir más allá de la capital. Así que decidimos ir a conocer los viñedos de la zona. Preguntando por aquí y por allá me habían dicho que hay dos áreas; la de Jumilla y la de Bullas. Como en este año he probado algunos vinos de Jumilla, pues me decanté por esta y comencé a investigar. Pues bueno, déjeme decirles que nos quedamos sin días para ver todo lo que ofrece la región y más aún que por lo corto de la visita de Glenda que sólo teníamos un día para ello.

Una de las cosas que más me sorprendió fue conocer que existe  una Ruta del Vino de Jumilla. En ella hay desde rutas y visitas a diversas bodegas hasta festivales de música y ahora en noviembre una semana gastronómica. La segunda tarea fue elegir la bodega a visitar. Hay muchísimas apuntadas; desde las más tradicionales y antiguas hasta las más modernas y recientes. Al final y luego de llamar a varias para hacer la reserva nos quedamos con las Bodegas Viña Elena de la familia Pacheco- ojo me enteré al llegar que era de la familia Pacheco aunque me recordé mucho de mi Lilita (mi abuelita) que tiene el mismo apellido. Es una bodega familiar, fundada por el abuelo de la generación actual en los 50´s y que ha pasado por tres  generaciones y ello queda claramente representado en sus tres naves o bodegas. La de la foto del inicio de este post es la más actual.

Allí una guía más que encantadora nos dio un tour tanto por los viñedos como por las bodegas y nos explicó con lujo de detalle de todo. Terminamos la visita con una cata de dos vinos estupendos acompañados de unas almendras, queso de la zona y empanadillas. La verdad de todos quedamos encantados, hasta los niñitos que nos acompañaron y que estuvieron bien pendientes y entretenidos con el cuento de la explicación de cómo se hace el vino- desde verlo en el viñedo (en sus propias palabras una matica) hasta que es embotellado y etiquetado listo para la venta.

La verdad que ahora que he descubierto este puerta hacia este mundo de los vinos, bodegas y viñedos estoy más que lista para emprender visitas a varios de ellos y de beneficiarme de los sabores tan divinos de la región. Como es de esperar, salimos de la tienda con varias botellas para degustar y hasta almendras y aceite de oliva hecho por ellos mismos!

Believe it or not,  after our ladies night, we woke up"early" to go on an adventure that pleasantly surprised us. Since Glendibiris told us she was coming to visit, we agreed that this time, her second visit to Murcia, we would go to discover beyond the capital. So we decided to go to the vineyards of the area. After asking here and there, I was told that there are two main areas, Jumilla and Bullas. This year I´ve tasted some wines from Jumilla, so I opted for this one and began to investigate. Well  let me tell you that we ran out of days to see everything it offers. Specially since Glenda´s visit was soooo short and we only had one day to enjoy it.


One of the things that surprised me most was learning that there is a Jumilla Wine Route. It has from routes and visits to several wineries to music festivals and now, in November, a gastronomic week. My second task was to choose the winery to visit. There are many listed, from the most traditional and old ones to the most modern and new. In the end,we made a reservation to visit the Vineyard Viña Elene  pertainig to the Pacheco family-BTW I learned uopn arrival that the Pacheco family was the owner. It reminded me my Lilita (my grandmother) who has the same surname. It is a family winery founded in 50's by the grandfather of the present generation and it has passed through three generations. This is clearly stated in its three warehouses. The photo in the beginning of this post is of the newst one.


Once there, a more than charming guide gave us a tour through the vineyards as well as through the  winery and explained everything in great detail. The visit ended with a tasting of two fabulous wines accompanied by some almonds, cheese and empanadillas. We were all delighted, even the kiddos who came with us to this visit. They paid attention and were really entertained with the story of  how wine is made- from  the vineyard  (in their own words a little plant) to the bottle, labeled ready to be sold.


To tell you the truth, now that I´ve discovered this gateway to the world of wines, wineries and vineyards I´m more than ready to visit several of them and to  benefit from the divine flavors of the region. As is expected, we left the store with several wine bottles and almonds and olive oil made by them!
